The successful candidate will be initially appointed to the Board as a member and Chair Designate.

The Chair Designate will be formally appointed as Chair at NCVO’s Annual General Meeting in November 2026. This timetable allows for a thorough induction and a phased handover. The initial term of office is for three years, with the option of standing for a second and final term of three years.

This is an unremunerated role, although reasonable travel and other out of pocket expenses will be reimbursed. Applicants must be ordinarily resident in the UK and comply with the Charity Commission’s Trustee eligibility requirements.

We envisage a time commitment of approximately two days a month. This includes the following:

  • Preparation and attendance at four Board meetings a year. Three Board meetings are held at NCVO’s office in London, during office hours. A fourth, longer Board meeting includes an annual away day and is allotted to strategic planning. This is a residential event and includes an overnight stay.
  • There are three sub-committee, the Finance & Commercial Committee, the Audit & Risk Committee and the Governance, Nominations & People Committee. These committee are currently held four times a year. The Chair is not a member of these committees and would only attend occasionally and in an ex-officio capacity.
  • Chairing NCVO’s Annual General Meeting (90 minutes, in November at NCVO’s London office).
  • Monthly meeting with the Chief Executive and ad hoc meetings and conversations with the Chief Executive and other members of staff as required.
  • Attendance at various NCVO events and supporting the Chief Executive externally.
  • As a member of its board, preparation and attendance at five CAF board meetings a year (https://www.cafonline.org/home/about-us/governance-and-policies).
